The Images broadcasted into homes across America in May 1997 were chilling. Thirty-nine members or the Heavan's Gate cult
lay dead in their bunk beds, dressed in identical asexual clothing and covered in a purple, diamond-shaped death shroud.
Their suicide was painstakingly orchestrated. The 18 men and 21 women gave a final farwell to a video camera, packed their
belongings, and then killed themselves, eating phenobarbital(poison)-laced applesauce and alcohol. According to video tapes
and other materials left behind, these people believed that shedding their "containers" their spirits would become
free to ascend to a higher plane of existance where they would board an alien spacecraft that trailed the Hale-Bopp commet.
